Coca Cola?

Wang Guangyi is a well known Chinese artist that I have learned from one of the lectures in Contemporary art history. One of the interesting things that was interesting though his work was one of the artworks that he has created called Criticism of Coca-Cola. Criticism of Coca-Cola was an oil painting he has produced, and was created in order for the viewers to understand the struggle between the cultural revolution within their country, as well as the view towards communism. Not only that the message was clear within the painting, but the style that the artist had within this painting, was spread out towards multiple works that he has created. The theme seems graphical because of the way Guangyi painted these artworks. The numbers that were represented within the paintings reminds the viewers the extreme restrictions that Guangyi and his people went through during the communist times; these were multiple symbols within the work that represent the worker's number within a factory or production setting.

Another Aspect towards Wang Guangyi’s Criticism of Coca Cola, rather than the style he has made in the painting, was the fact that it was satirical other than just sending the message to the viewers. Viewers can understand that the artist within this painting was making a mockery out of the communist movement; the message expects people within the country to have expectations within the cultural revolution, rather than being free from restrictions.

The way Guangyi made the painting also reminded me of how Emory Douglas approached his paintings. His style seems similar to Guangyi, other than his message towards Blacks within his community. Overall, he and Guangyi at least made their message sent in order to show the viewers the emphasis within their worldly situations as well as the history behind their people as well and what they represent within the world.  In conclusion, these were some of the most fascinating paintings Wang Guangyi has produced during his time as an artist in China. The way he created his paintings were rather unique, as well as showing the viewers the Communist expectations towards China and their people; this is what I have learned from Guangyi's Coca-Cola Criticism, as well as several paintings that he created that were similar to the style and approach to it
